At Kohana School, our examination system is designed to provide a comprehensive assessment structure for our students.
Here are the details:
Pre-School (Nursery, Lower Kindergarten, Upper Kindergarten):
- No Formal Exams: There are no formal examinations in pre-school. Assessments are ongoing and informal. While the curriculum is theme-based, the informal assessments are skill-based and cover six key areas: literacy, numeracy, science, art, fine and gross motor skills, and socio-emotional development.
Grade 1 to Grade 10:
- Weekly Cyclic Tests:
- Grades 1 to 5: Students have weekly cyclic tests for each subject. These formative tests are short assessments to check the progress of the current topic being taught.
- Grades 6 to 10: Students have weekly cyclic tests for two subjects. These formative assessments aim to evaluate their understanding of the current topics.
Major Assessments:
- Mid-Year Progression Tests: Conducted in September for all grades.
- Year-End Progression Tests: Conducted in March for all grades.
Checkpoint Assessments:
- Grades 5 and 8: Students undertake Cambridge Checkpoint assessments in English, Math, and Science at the end of the academic year. The question papers for these are sent directly by Cambridge International Education (CIE) and serve as diagnostic tests to evaluate students’ understanding and skills in the three core subjects.
IGCSE, AS-Level, and A-Level Assessments:
- Grade 10: Students attend the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) exams at the end of the academic year in subjects of their choice.
- Grade 11: Students undertake the AS-Level exam at the end of the academic year.
- Grade 12: Students undertake the A-Level exam at the end of the academic year.
CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) Cambridge Baseline Tests:
- Nursery to Grade 10: Students participate in CEM Cambridge baseline tests twice a year, once at the beginning and once at the end. These adaptive tests are designed to understand students’ skill levels in five different areas and support the planning of teaching-learning approaches throughout the year.
Additional Information:
- Project-based Learning (PBL): Students participate in regular project-based assessments each term. These projects are planned based on concepts of subject integration and higher-order thinking skills. They provide students the opportunity to think beyond the demands of textbook learning and encourage them to delve into real-life challenges and solutions.
- Homework: Assigned from Pre-Primary to higher grades to support ongoing learning.
- Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTM): Grade sheets and assessment progress will be discussed with parents during regular PTMs.
- Assessment Philosophy: The overall objective of assessments is to enhance skills and performance levels rather than merely attaining marks or grades.
We believe these methods will provide a holistic and continuous assessment of our students’ abilities and progress, preparing them effectively for their future academic endeavors.
